File comparison: Excel price list versus CSV and two versions of a contract text

Two price lists in different formats (Excel and CSV) are compared item by item: new, removed, price, name. Additionally, a comparison of two text versions with the modified paragraphs. Every incorporated change was found, none invented.

Sample work (demo), not a client job. Built as a trial task with invented example data; the check figures below come from the automatic test run and are not polished.

What was built

  • Comparison via article number, even with different column and row order and decimal comma
  • Log: new and removed items, changed prices and names
  • Text comparison of two versions with the modified sections, as a file and as a view
  • Data invented; the changes were incorporated beforehand and were completely found

How it was checked

Automatic test run on 2026-10-31, taken from the log (test data invented, figures measured):

  • Price list XLSX (60) versus CSV (61, different column/row order, decimal comma, spaces, lowercase numbers): new 4/4, removed 3/3, price 6/6, name 3/3, unit 1/1 - exactly the incorporated ones, no false changes
  • XLSX log read back identical

Limits

What this sample does not cover, so nobody expects more:

  • Comparison requires a unique key (article number); lists without a key can only be compared line by line/imprecisely - in that case, the log is a presumption and is marked as such
  • Column mapping via a name list (article number/ArtNo/SKU ...); exotic headers must be mapped manually once
  • Document comparison for text (TXT/MD, previously extracted from DOCX/PDF); formatting changes (bold, font) are not detected; Word 'track changes' is not generated
  • Formulas in XLSX are compared as values (openpyxl data_only), not as formula text
