IFC Model Check: Information Requirements as IDS, Defect List with GlobalIds

A building model was checked against agreed information requirements: classes, properties, values, and assignments. Each defect is listed with its GlobalId, while correct components remain without notification.

Sample work (demo), not a client job. Built as a trial task with invented example data; the check figures below come from the automatic test run and are not polished.

What was built

  • Requirements as an IDS file, validated against the schema
  • Defects per rule with GlobalId, without false positives on correct components
  • Inspection report for reading and a defect list for further processing

Information is checked, not geometry. No buildingSMART certificate and no statement on whether a value is technically sufficient; exports from other programs may vary.

How it was checked

Automatic test run on 2026-10-31, taken from the log (test data invented, figures measured):

  • IFC4 model (2 stories, 12 walls + 1 proxy, 6 doors, 8 windows, 6 rooms), IDS 1.0 with 8 specifications (XSD-valid) + 2 additional checks: 11/11 built-in defects found exactly (GlobalIds per rule), 0 false positives

Limits

What this sample does not cover, so nobody expects more:

  • Information is checked (classes, properties, values, data types, assignments, GlobalIds), not geometry: collisions, distances, area calculation from solids and openings are not...
  • The information requirements (IDS or EIR/BEP) are provided by the client; if an IDS is missing, it is recreated from their requirements list and confirmed by them prior to the check - what is not agreed...
  • Tested with IFC4 from ifcopenshell 0.9; legacy IFC2x3 models and exports from Revit/ArchiCAD/Allplan may differ (different Pset names, IfcWallStandardCase, units) - the sample does not replace a test...
  • No official buildingSMART certificate and no liability for the technical correctness of the values (e.g., whether F90 is sufficient for fire protection) - what is checked is compliance with the...
  • The defect list is BCF-like (JSON with topics, GlobalId, status), not a signed BCF-2.1/3.0 file with viewpoints; conversion to .bcfzip is possible, but not part of this sample
