Installer: a Python program as a Windows package with installation script

A small calculation program is packaged into a standalone Windows application that runs without Python, using an installation script without administrator rights. The package was freshly unpacked, started, and installed.

Sample work (demo), not a client job. Built as a trial task with invented example data; the check figures below come from the automatic test run and are not polished.

What was built

  • Standalone application, runs without Python on the target machine
  • Installation script without administrator rights
  • Version information in program and Windows file properties
  • Program invented; for client work, your program, your name, and your version number

Download preisrechner-win64.zip

The program is not signed; Windows may warn upon the first start on a foreign computer.

How it was checked

Automatic test run on 2026-10-31, taken from the log (test data invented, figures measured):

  • exe package Preisrechner-2.1.0-win64.zip (6.9 MB, build 7.81 s) freshly unpacked: checksum ok, start.cmd --version without Python in PATH -> 'Preisrechner 2.1.0', gross 100/19=119.00 and 0.05/19=0.06, Windows file version 2.1.0.0

Limits

What this sample does not cover, so nobody expects more:

  • Package = ZIP with single exe and installation script (no admin, to %LOCALAPPDATA%\Programs); no MSI/Inno Setup wizard (would require additional tool, free but not installed)
  • exe is not signed - SmartScreen warns on first start on foreign computers (certificate costs money)
  • only Windows x64 built; macOS/Linux each require their own build on the target system
  • Virus scanners can falsely report PyInstaller exe; not checked against VirusTotal
